The people of AlTo are dedicated to protecting and appreciating the rich natural and cultural heritage of the lands and waters surrounding Mount Tompotika, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Sulawesi is both biologically rich and totally unique, with nearly half of its vertebrate species found nowhere else on earth.
Mt. Tompotika is also considered a sacred place of origin for all three of the indigenous ethnic groups in the area. Our partnership facilitates direct, people-to-people contact between the residents of Tompotika and other conservationists, underscoring the global significance of this special place.
Together, we take direct, immediate action to prevent the extinction of Tompotika’s endangered wildlife and the destruction of its native rainforests (Maleo and Forest Conservation programs). At the same time, we work side-by-side to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature and to support lifestyles and practices that sustain the lands and waters in which our communities are rooted (Awareness Campaign, Art for Conservation, and Alternative Livelihoods programs).
