An initial focus of AlTo’s conservation work is Sulawesi’s endangered Maleo bird (Macrocephalon maleo), whose huge eggs are the target of widespread poaching for sale as a luxury item (the eggs are not needed for subsistence).  

Since August 2006, through the efforts of AlTo and its partners, all taking of eggs at the nesting ground at Taima, Sulawesi—one of the very best of only a few dozen Maleo nesting grounds remaining anywhere—has stopped, and teams of local people are guarding the area to ensure that Maleos can nest in peace, their eggs will be allowed to hatch, and new maleo chicks can grow up in their native habitat.

Salah satu fokus kegiatan AlTo yang pertama adalah burung Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo) yang terancam punah dan endemik di Sulawesi.  Telur maleo yang sangat besar seringkali diambil oleh manusia untuk dijual sebagai barang mewah (bukan kebutuhan sehari-hari).  

Sejak bulan Agustus 2006, melalui upaya AlTo dan mitra AlTo, semua pengambilan telur di tempat bertelur maleo di desa Taima, Sulawesi--salah satu yang terbaik dari hanya beberapa tempat bertelur di mana pun--sudah dihentikan.  Kini sejumlah kelompok masyarakat menjaga wilayah tersebut supaya burung maleo dapat bertelur tanpa gangguan, telur-telurnya bisa menetas, dan anak maleo dapat menjadi dewasa dalam habitatnya yang asli.
