WITH ALTO I KNOW THAT I’M SUPPORTING THE MOVEMENT AND NOT JUST THE ORGANIZATION.
AlTo is unique in that I know my donation is put to use on the ground immediately to educate people so they will live sustainably and appreciate the richness of their fragile and diverse environment.
My donation is an investment in social change, where paradigm shifts in behavior are the norm.
With AlTo I know that I’m supporting the movement and not just the organization.
–Sue Trevathan, Environmental consultant and student of Nature, Vashon Island, Washington

IMPRESSIVE ABILITY TO CREATE ALLIANCES
AlTo is a unique conservation organization, with a commitment to the health of the earth, the health of the communities that inhabit it, and the beauty of the natural world.
I support AlTo, in part, because of its impressive ability to create alliances from disparate factions. AlTo sees and cultivates the good in people, building strong, tender, and enduring relationships in the communities it serves.
–Sue Mapel, Social Worker, Cambridge, Massachusetts

I THINK WE PARTICULARLY NEED GRASS-ROOTS, CLEARLY FOCUSED EFFORTS LIKE THOSE OF ALTO.
Over the course of a few decades of traveling the world, sometimes for recreation, sometimes for the hard slog of conservation, I’ve worked with professional conservationists from every continent, ranging from leaders of the largest conservation organizations to folks trying to make a difference one community at a time.
We need all kinds of people and all kinds of organizations to undertake effective conservation, but I think we particularly need grass-roots, clearly focused efforts like those of AlTo.
My wife and I support many fine conservation groups but none can beat AlTo for making us feel like our modest contributions are efficiently and effectively spent.
–Dr. Malcolm L. Hunter, Jr., Libra Professor of Conservation Biology, University of Maine, Orono, Maine

Here’s a sample of what folks say about why they give:

GRASSROOTS CONSERVATION DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.

AlTo is one of those organizations that you just have to feel good about supporting.  It has that rare combination of qualities that make it stand out from so many others – carefully chosen and well-focused conservation actions, comprehensive understanding of the problems, meaningful involvement by stakeholders and affected parties, passionate and dedicated personnel, and efficient and effective use of funds.
Grassroots conservation doesn’t get any better than this. If you agree that conservation is a worldwide problem but don’t know where to start, AlTo is an excellent choice to support.
–Dr. Peter Dunwiddie, Affililate Professor, Biology Dept., University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

ALTO IS ACTING EFFECTIVELY TO PRESERVE GENETIC DIVERSITY IN AN AREA OF THE WORLD WHERE IT IS GREATEST.
Our world is small and troubled. What can one person do to cure Planet Earth? It seems hopeless. It is not!
I’ve tried to help by contributing financially to many valid and useful organizations, but had no feedback, not knowing how my tiny contribution was used, not knowing if I actually helped.
That changed when I learned about AlTo, its goals, people, and methods, then became involved personally as well as financially.
I joined the 2009 AlTo Tour, that was much more than a tour. I was able to use my expertise to actually contribute to AlTo conservation efforts.
I witnessed their very effective education program in schools, experienced the impact AlTo has on the peoples of both Sulawesi and the U.S., and surveyed the genetic diversity of butterfly fauna.
I am now convinced that one individual — me — can make a difference, and know it! Others can, too, even if unable to travel to Sulawesi.
AlTo is acting effectively to preserve genetic diversity in an area of the world where it is greatest. Donors can be sure that they will get their money’s worth!
–Dr. Gary D. Bernard, University of Washington butterfly vision scientist, Federal Way, Washington

ALTO HAS VIRTUALLY NO OVERHEAD
It is very satisfying to support an environmental organization where the contributions directly support proactive objectives. AlTo has virtually no overhead, and thus provides the best “bang for the buck”.
–John Gerstle, Retired Boeing engineering manager, Vashon Island, Washington
